Broward College continues to set the example of what is possible. Indeed, last Thursday, April 20, 2023, Broward College was recognized as one of the top 10 from more than 1000 community and state colleges in the nation by the Aspen Institute. Notably, Broward College hit this high mark for a record FIFTH TIME.

The Aspen Prize, awarded every two years since 2011, recognizes outstanding institutions that demonstrate excellence in six areas: teaching and learning, certificate and degree completion, transfer and bachelor’s attainment, workforce success, equitable outcomes for students of color and students from low-income backgrounds, and leadership and culture.

Throughout the Aspen interview process and during the public recognition, the Aspen Institute cited Broward College’s discipline and courage and elevated many of its efforts as models for the nation. Here are a few of those points of pride:

  • The College moved to a priority-based budgeting framework, which led to the difficult but important decision to stop investing in athletics and other areas that yielded relatively little returns to its students. Instead, Broward College reinvested those resources to reduce its student-to-advisor ratio from 700:1 to less than 300:1, supported students with food insecurity, and invested in faculty development such as the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE).
  • Broward College expanded access with Broward UP to bring the classroom and learning to communities where people may not have access to transportation, time, or technology.
  • Broward College decided to be among the very first in the nation to launch career-oriented pathways.
  • Aspen also further highlighted the College’s strong transfer partnerships and innovative partnership with Lyft.
