Early on the morning of Saturday, September 24, a group of Broward College Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) alumni, as well as staff and friends, greeted the day with a 5K urban hike beginning at Las Olas Blvd along route A1A at beautiful Fort Lauderdale beach.
Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society that recognizes the high academic achievement of community college students and provides opportunities for them to grow as scholars and leaders. The Phi Theta Kappa Foundation organized this year’s PTK Scholars Dash 5K and challenged PTK members from across the country to raise funds and awareness of its Golden Opportunity Scholarships. These scholarships would give deserving Broward College students, and students from other institutions, the financial means to join PTK and the potential to unlock some of the many benefits and scholarships offered by Phi Theta Kappa.
Among the participants was Phi Theta Kappa alumna and Broward College graduate, Jessica Figueroa. Reflecting on her experience with PTK, she said “As a Broward College alumna, I cherish memories of my time and involvement with the PTK Mu Mu Chapter at Central Campus. As a freshman, PTK members embraced me as their mentee, which positively shaped my college experience in building my confidence to be the first in my family to graduate from college. To me, the organization was about building a community of students eager to be involved beyond their classroom studies and encourage community involvement through mentorship, volunteerism, and leadership.”
For alumna and artist Claudette Goico-Šernius who also joined the 5K event, community impact was a key motivator in joining PTK. “Phi Theta Kappa gave me peace of mind while I studied. They recognized my community service and leadership with the opportunity to continue my education and go on to empower others through service”.
In the spirit of excelling at giving back, the team of Broward College PTK alumni and friends surpassed their fundraising goal. Moreover, the Florida region team, in which all Florida participants were deemed to be members, was top of the leaderboard out of all regional teams in the US as of 9/24/2022. We congratulate all the participants who raised funds for this worthy cause.
Broward College Phi Theta Kappa alumni are encouraged to keep in touch and to ensure that their details are up to date with Alumni & Friends so that they can partake in new events and experiences of benefit to them in the near future. Click here to update your contact information.
